Police of Kyoto

Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan for over 1,200 years, is at present flourishing as an international city of culture and sightseeing based on the harmony between new cultures and long-lasting tradition. Crimes are getting more atrocious and crafty these days as Japanese social situation is constantly transforming. Police officers work very hard day and night to ensure public safety and to maintain security.

To protect local residents from crimes, we are making every effort to establish secure and sound community by cooperating with or supporting crime prevention volunteer group in their activities. Also our adopted comprehensive measures to protect children from crimes include issuance of "Children Safety Information", spot protection and guidance activity in entertainment districts, promotion of sound youth development and juvenile support. Furthermore, we are cracking down crimes which threatens people's daily life, such as organized underground consumer financing, various fraud schemes which senior citizens are victimized, illegal disposal of industrial waste, cybercrime which makes use of internet. In Kyoto's famous entertainment districts of Gion and Kiyamachi, "Gion Kiyamachi Police Squad" officers are on the beat in a group every night for the prevention of street crimes and for cracking down sly sex-related special business establishments.

There are over 180 police boxes (Koban) and over 100 residential police boxes (Chuzaisho) in Kyoto Prefecture. Police officers working at Koban or Chuzaisho undertake patrol and make routine visits to households and offices within the area of jurisdiction. Airborne Police helicopters ensure safety of Kyoto from air. Heian Mounted Police is conducting patrols around schools, guiding children on the street and socializing with local residents.

Police investigators are making every effort in investigating crimes and arresting criminals so that local people and visitors feel safe here in Kyoto. Investigators of the Mobil Investigation Unit rush to crime scene by unmarked police automobile to arrest suspect. Officers of the Mobil Identification Unit collect material evidences at crime scene.

The Institute of Scientific Investigation carries out scientific inspection of material evidences and relevant research.

For establishing safe traffic environment, the police are cracking down on speeding and driving under influence of alcohol which could cause disastrous traffic accident. Also we offer traffic safety education at refresher classes for drivers with renewed licenses and traffic safety education seminars for senior citizens and children.

To ensure safety of VIP the police provide escort and protection services in a soft and smart manner. The police are always on alert against terrorist and guerrilla activities. Also we undertake exercise and training in the field of rescue activities to properly respond to natural disasters.
