Penalties on Drunk Driving

Drivers

Drunk driving constitutes a crime. You may think that a bit of alcohol should be no problem. However, with a glass of alcohol you could end up losing all you have.

Drunk driving

Imprisonment with forced labor for up to 5 years, or fine of 1 million yen or less.

Driving under the influence of alcohol

Imprisonment with forced labor for up to 3 years, or fine of 500,000 yen or less.

Refusing to be put in breathalyzer test

Imprisonment with forced labor for up to 3 months, or fine of 500,000 yen or less.

You can be criminally charged if you overlook drunk driving.

Passengers

Don't get on the vehicle when its driver is under the influence of alcohol or drunk.

You demand or ask a driver to offer you transportation to get on the driver's vehicle

knowing that the driver is drunk

Imprisonment with forced labor for up to 3 years, or fine of 500,000 yen or less

knowing that the driver is under the influence of alcohol

Imprisonment with forced labor for up to 2 years, or fine of 300,000 yen or less

*A passengers who has driver's license knowing that the driver is drunk or under the influence of alcohol is also subject to administrative disposition.

Providing drunk driver with alcohol and/or vehicle is now severely punished than ever!

Offering a vehicle to a drunk person who is likely or about to drive

in case that the driver is drunk

Even on the next day of your drinking opportunity, you could be charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. If you feel you are inebriated, don't drive and instead use public transportation.

Designated Driver Campaign is in progress

In "Designated Driver Campaign" a driver is designated not to drink alcohol while dining with friends or colleagues and later to be in charge of driving them home.
