Traffic Offender Re-education Courses

 Outline

Traffic offender re-education courses are designed to raise the safety awareness of drivers through direct experience of social participation-type volunteer activities and practical driving skills instruction.

Normally, if you accumulate 6 demerit points for light traffic violations (offenses up to 3 points) (or if you lose 6 points in the case of a traffic accident), your license will be suspended. However, if you undertake a traffic offender re-education course, you can avoid the suspension (and the offense will not remain on your record).

If you do not take a traffic offender re-education course your license will be suspended (and you will be unable to attend a re-education course for drivers who have had their license suspended.

Details of re-education courses

A choice between the following two types of re-education courses is offered.

Social-participation activities experience

This type of re-education aims at the raising the safety awareness of drivers, through direct experience in social participation-style volunteer activities.

Two social participation experience courses are offered: Course A, where the activity is done on the same day as the re-education lecture; and Course B, where the activity is done on a separate day, before the day of the lecture.

  • Course A = Social participation activity experience on same day as re-education lecture
  • Course B = Social participation activity experience on a day previous to the day of the lecture
  • Course time = Social participation activity (3 hours) + lecture (3 hours)
  • Course fee (incl. notification fee) = (total) 9,950 yen

For both courses, the lecture is held in the afternoon

Examples of social participation activities are as follows.

  • Traffic safety campaigning (e.g., distributing flyers)
  • Providing daily living support to elderly people in care facilities
  • Kyoto City beautification activities (work with a volunteer organization around JR Nishioji station)

The above activities are each conducted only on particular days of the week.

Re-education course locations

You can choose the place and day of social participation activity when you book the course.

Driving safety training in a real car

This course is aimed at enhancing awareness about driving safety through the experience of driving a car and an aptitude assessment performed using a driving simulator.

This course does not include social participation activities.

In this course, the practical training and lecture are held on the same day: training in the morning, lecture in the afternoon.
