Endangered Spiders in Kyoto Prefecture

Spiders found in Kyoto Prefecture fall into 357 species from 45 families and one order, of which no extinct, no critically endangered, five endangered, three vulnerable, and two near threatened & least concern species are listed in the Kyoto Prefecture Red Data Book. Of the species observed in the prefecture, threatened species account for 2.8%.

Outline
The burrowing wolf spider inhabits beaches, building its nest in vertical burrows 10 to 20 cm deep in the sand. Coming out of its nest during the nighttime hours, it feeds on insects.

Outline
The water spider is the only species of spider that lives underwater. It spreads threads between waterweeds to build a dome-shaped home and carries air from the water surface and stores it under the dome.

Outline
This species inhabits spaces in the stone walls of shrines and temples, as well as in the gardens of large old houses, where it digs tubular burrows. It catches insects passing by the burrow.

Outline
