Kamo Horserace

Kamo Horserace

This is an ancient event in commemoration of Emperor Horikawa's having moved the ceremony of Butokuden Palace in 1073, dedicated to Kamigamo - jinja Shrine. It starts with an iris root ceremony in the morning. In the afternoon there is an equestrian ceremony in which riders pray for safety and victory. Afterwards there is an event held in which some ten horses compete with each other over speed and form.
