Mt. Kurama Bamboo Cutting Ceremony

This ceremony originated from when the priest Minenobu, who was in training around the years 889-898, used the power of Buddhism to slay a large snake which had suddenly appeared. A piece of green bamboo nearly 4 meters long and 15 centimeters thick is used as the large snake. The monk Kurama, dressed as a warrior priest, foretells whether the harvest will be rich or poor, as he demonstrates how fast he can cut the bamboo. This ancient ceremony, which dates back 1,000 years, is performed for the destruction of wickedness and the establishment of righteousness, as well as an expression of appreciation for water.
