Hanase Torch-throwing Festival

Hanase Torch-throwing Festival

At this fire festival, which originated at a mountain village in Rakuhoku (northern Kyoto), people pray for the spirits of the dead, fire prevention and a plentiful harvest. About 1,000 torches stuck into the riverbed are lighted together. People throw the torches at a large umbrella 20 meters high, setting the umbrella ablaze. The fire from the torches looks like rain, producing a grand sight.
