Hirogawara Torch-throwing Festival

At this fire festival, which originated at a mountain village in Rakuhoku (northern Kyoto), people pray for the spirits of the dead, fire prevention and a plentiful harvest. About 1,000 torches stuck into the riverbed or small paths are lighted together. In this valiant ceremony people throw the torches at a large umbrella 20 meters high, setting the umbrella ablaze. The flames rising in all directions come together to form an arc, scorching the night sky.
