Yase Shamenchi Dance

This is a unique dance performed in memory of the soul of the enshrined deity, Akimoto Tajima-no-Kami Takatomo. Also called the "Lantern Dance," the dancers, who are young boys, wear facetted lanterns atop their heads as they dance. One of the most remarkable festivals in northern Kyoto, the dance has been designated as an intangible cultural asset.
