Saga Torch Ceremony

This ceremony is held on the anniversary of the death of Buddha Shakyamuni. Three torches 7 meters in height are lit. Whether the harvest will be rich or poor that year is foretold by the intensity of the flames. Thirteen lanterns standing in front of the main temple building are lit. The market price of rice and stocks are foretold by the height of the lanterns. This is one of the three great fire festivals in Kyoto.
