Kizu River Lantern Festival

This festival was started by Buddhist priests in town to pray for the souls of victims of water accidents, out of sympathy for bereaved relatives _ due to the many deaths formerly caused as a result of water accidents on the Kizu River. The festival has been held without fail every year since then. In May 1970 it was taken over by the Kasagi-cho Tourism Association, which still runs the festival today. Between 700 and 800 paper lanterns are floated on the surface of the river, forming the Chinese character "dai" (big), which shines on the water's surface.
