Kami-nara Zuikimikoshi (Taro Stalk Portable Shrines)

photo name

It is said that Misono Shrine in Kami-nara was established in November 787 during the time of Emperor Kammu, with three deities moved there from Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara. It was also used as a place for growing such fruits and vegetables as melon, eggplant and daikon radish, to be given to the Imperial Court. Nowadays people pray in this festival each October for a plentiful grain harvest, and carry a "taro stalk portable shrines," the roofs of which are (is) adorned with stalks of taro harvested that year, and thirty other kinds of vegetables, including red pepper and reddish brown azuki beans.
