Futon and Drum Stand Festival

This festival is said to have originated when people carried these drum stands to express appreciation for divine protection from spring to autumn and to pray for a plentiful harvest. The biggest autumn festival in Kizu-cho, it began at the end of the Edo Period. The drum stands, provided by drum stand unions, are adorned with colorful futons. Children get on the drum stands, which are carried through the town by dozens of people, both young and old, to the rhythm of the children beating the drums. The drum stands consist of drums set atop sculpted stands. Three layers of velvet-wrapped futons are placed on the wooden frame as a roof. There are currently six of these drum stands in use.
