Currency (exchange rates, ATM information)

Currency

All 1,000 yen, 5,000 yen and 10,000 yen bills were replaced with new ones in November 2004. Also, 500 yen coins were issued in 2000. Both the new 500 yen coins and the old ones are in circulation. Some vending machines do not accept new bills or new coins. However, all shops accept them.

Exchange Rates

To exchange foreign currency for Japanese yen:

  • Most stores will not exchange foreign currency. This must be done at a post office or bank.
  • All cities in Kyoto Prefecture have post offices where foreign currency can be exchanged. (See list of post offices.)

ATM

Some ATM machines remain open 24 hours a day. There are postal ATM machines at the Kyoto Central Post Office. Some ATM machines at banks remain open 24 hours a day. All ATM machines at post offices and banks are open until evening. There are also international ATM machines which accommodate Cirrus and Plus.
