You can catch a sight of maiko and geiko walking through the elegant streets of Gion, one of the big downtown districts in Kyoto. This area extends from Shirakawaminami-dori Street on the north. South from Shinbashi-dori Street is Donguri-dori. The western part of Gion begins at Yamato Oji-dori Street. Gion extends as far east as Higashi Oji-dori. In the Edo Period ochaya (geisha houses) went up in this area. The part of Gion on the south side of Shijo-dori Street retains its tranquil, old-fashioned charm.
