Donburi

A donburi is a bowl of rice served with a topping.  The topping served on each donburi is reflected by its name in the menu–for example, in the case of ebifurai (fried shrimp), it is called ebifurai-don. These can be eaten in places such as shokudo.

Examples of Donburi

Kaisen-don: Sashimi and seafood are served as a topping. Soy sauce is poured on top before eating. Sometimes the rice served with this type of don will be sushi rice.

Katsu-don: Pork cutlet. Meats aside from pork are often used; these have different names.

Gyu-don: Broiled beef with the same flavoring as sukiyaki served on rice.

  Ten-don: Tempura served on rice.

Wafu-don: This is often flavored with soy-sauce. Grated radish etc. is sometimes served alongside.

Chuka-don: Chinese happosai chop-suey served on rice.
