Ramen

Ramen is usually eaten in restaurants that only specialize in ramen or Chinese cuisine.  The aroma of the ramen soup wafts into the street, making the restaurants easy to find as you pass by. While the soup base of udon or soba is made from bonito, ramen soup is made from pork or chicken meat juices.  Pork and bean sprouts are often served as a topping.  When ordering ramen, staff will generally not come over to seat you, so just sit down at the counter and ask for ‘ramen’.  However, you can usually decide how you’d like the consistency of your soup, so it’s best to decide in advance.  Ramen is Chinese in origin and so ramen restaurants often have fried rice, gyoza (pot stickers), and karaage (fried chicken nuggets) on the menu.
