Otani University

The origin of Otani University goes back to 1665, when the Higashi Hoganji temple, the headquarters of the Jodo Shin Otani Sect, established a seminary in Kyoto as a center for the study of Mahayana Buddhism. Now this university consists of Faculty of Letters (Comprising 8 departments), Graduate School, and Junior College, with a current enrollment of somewhat approximately 4,500 students. Many internationally known Buddhist scholar, philosopher and professors studied this university. For example, Nanjo Bunyu(1849-1927), Soga Ryojin(1875-1971), Kaneko Daiei(1881-1976), Yamaguchi Susumu(1895-1976),Nishitani Kenji(1900-1990)etc. Daisetsu. T. Suzuki (1870-1966) was also one of the celeblrated professors of this university. (Zen and Mahayana Buddhism is one of his notable works in English.) This university has not only cutting edge facilities like a museum, a library, a multimedia hall, a joint research center etc, but also has an old red-brick lecture building “Gingen-kanEbuilt in 1913. ) A well-known Japanese writer Yukio Mishima has described it in his immortal work of Kinkaku-ji.
