Ritsumeikan University
Ritsumeikan University, located in Kinugasa, was founded in 1869 by Saionji Kinmochi as a private academy from his residence on the site of Kyoto's Imperial Palace. Saionji was one of the leading statesmen and cosmopolitans of modern Japan. Boasting one of the longest histories and traditions among private universities in Japan, Ritsumeikan has long enjoyed high acclaim, both domestically and abroad, as a "fresh seat of learning amidst an atmosphere of freedom."
