Ryukoku University

This university was originally established in 1639 as the Hongwan - ji Temple Gakuryo. The name was later changed to Gakurin. In 1922 it was changed again to Ryukoku University. The Omiya Campus near Nishihongan - ji Temple emits a sense of history. Departments of Engineering and Social Studies were set up at the Seta Campus in 1989, in commemoration of the 350th anniversary. With the Department of International Culture set up in 1996, the university currently has seven departments.
