Chion - in Temple

This is the main temple of the Jodo Sect. The location of Chion - in Temple is said to be the spot where the priest Honenshonin entered Otani Zenbo Temple in 1175. Subsequently, during the Edo Period, the temple grounds were expanded. Within the precincts are the largest Sanmon Gate in Japan, and the so-called Seven Mysteries, including wasuregasa (forgotten umbrella), Uguisubari Passageway and Uryuseki Rock - which are sights not to be missed. The copper bell, the largest in Japan, is famous for its tolling at midnight on New Year's Eve. It takes 17 people working together to ring this bell. This magnificent sight can only to be seen at a great temple such as Chion - in Temple.
