Chion - ji Temple

The main image at this temple is the Monju Bosatsu, an Important Cultural Property popularly known as "Kirido no Monjudo." Since olden times this has been considered one of the Three Monju (bodhisattva of wisdom and intellect) of Japan. (The other two are from Dewa Kameoka and Yamato Sakurai.) As suggested by the saying "Two heads are better than one," the Monju are known for their wisdom. The precincts are lined with ema (votive pictures) left by people praying for academic or professional success, or that they will pass their school entrance exams. This temple contains a Taho Pagoda and a kinko (drum and cymbals), both of which are Important Cultural Properties, and many other important cultural assets, including the tomb of the poet Izumi Shikibu.
