Joshoko - ji Temple

This Zen temple of the Rinzaishu-Tenryuji School was established by Emperor Kogon in the Muromachi and Northern Dynasty Periods. Emperor Kogon took refuge here during the historical upheavals caused by the great disturbances between the Southern and Northern Dynasties. The temple has enjoyed a close affinity with emperors since that time. Overcoming Akechi Mitsuhide's assassination of Nobunaga by fire, it has a long history as a Bodhi temple of the Zen sect serving the Imperial household. In the garden are famous cherry trees that bloom in mid-April, including the "kokonoezakura", designated by the national government as natural monuments, and the sakon-no-sakura, pruned from a tree of the Imperial Palace.
