Kaniman - ji Temple

Formerly known as Kamihata Temple, this temple was built around 680, the end of Hakuho period, by the Hata family. Thanks to the priest, Gyoki, this temple was fervently worshipped by the people. The main hall, which houses the image of the seated Shaka Nyorai, was built in 1759. This temple is particularly famous for the story of the repayment of kindness by a crab, which appears in the Kokonchomonju and the Konjakumonogatari-shu (Tales of Times Now Past). The temple is also known for the seated Shaka Nyorai image, which is designated as a National Treasure.
