Kitanotenman-gu Shrine

Kitanotenman-gu Shrine, popularly known as "Tenjin-san," enshrine the spirit of Sugawara Michizane, the god of scholarship. Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is the headquarters of the Tenmangu Shrines throughout Japan. Flea markets, are held here on the 25th of each month, corresponding to the days of Michizane's birth and death. Sold at these flea markets are plants, antiques and other curios, including old furniture and utensils. Also known for its plum blossoms, in February this shrine attracts crowds of people with some 2,000 plum trees adorned with red and white blossoms emitting a delicate fragrance.
