Nagaokatenman-gu Shrine

Sugawara Michizane (the slandered scholar and statesman) stopped here on his way to Dazaifu where he was banished. He was enshrined here as a kind of keepsake of his memory. As he departed, he looked back upon his beloved Kyoto. In edo period Nagaokatenman - gu Shrine was a possession of Hachijonomiya (the imperial family). In the precincts, which are famous for their beautiful scenery, is the expansive Hachijo-ga-Ike Pond. The approach to the shrine runs through the center of the pond. On both sides of the approach are numerous Kirishima azalea bushes believed to be about 150 years old. The present a part of main sanctuary of Nagaokatenman-gu Shrine was moved here from a part of Heian Shrine in 1941.
