Daigo - ji Temple

Established in 874 by Shobo atop Mt. Daigo, Daigo - ji Temple became a Chokugan - ji Temple
(A Temple built by the Emperor's will) in 907. As its importance grew, the Shimogaran (ShimoDaigo)
came into being. Contained in the present Daigo - ji Temple are numerous cultural properties,
including a five-tiered pagoda (a National Treasure and the oldest wooden structure
in Kyoto Prefecture) and Sanboin Garden (designated as a special historic site
and special place of scenic beauty), the latter of which Toyotomi Hideyoshi used
as his own private retreat.
