Hacho-daira Wetland

This road leads to Haccho-daira, a wetland named for the length of its perlmeter, 8 cho (1 cho is about 109 meters). It is one of the few high-altitude wetlands in western Japan, and formed because the valley that drained it to the south was blocked by landslides.Covered with moss (Prairie sphagnum) ,it is home to rare plants and insects, and together with the surrounding deciduous broad-leaved forest, it makes up a lovely landscape. Haccho-daira is an important academic resource, as the pollen and other plant and animal remains encased in its layers of glacial deposits shed light on climate and vegetation changes spanning some 30,000years.

Preservation was initiated by Kyoto City in 1979, including the boardwalk, environmental surveys and patrols, and fences to prevent vegetation damage by deer.
