Q and A on Driver License Renewal

I lost my driver license (or it was stolen). Can I renew it?

Yes. You can renew it. But before renewal, the license must first be reissued.

Re-issue and renewal procedures at the same time is available only for weekdays.

Please come to Re-issue windows so that you can finish re-issue procedure at the time　of renewal reception time finishes.

The renewal period has passed. Can I still renew my license?

No. Your license cannot be renewed. Please follow the procedure for expired licenses.

I want to renew my license earlier than the renewal period, because I will be having a baby (or other reason). Is this possible?

Anyone who cannot renew the license within the usual allowed period, unavoidably, due to child birth, overseas travel, or other reason, can apply for renewal (special renewal) in advance.

• In addition to the documents required for normal renewal, please bring your maternity record book (boshi techo), passport, or other appropriate evidence.
• The places and times for application and registration are the same as for normal renewal.
• Note that in the case of "special renewal" the license validity period is shorter than the case of normal renewal.

I lost my license renewal notice (postcard). Can I still renew my license?

Yes. You can still renewal your license, even without the postcard. Apply for renewal at your designated place of license renewal.

Can I renew my license on a Sunday?

Yes. The Kyoto Prefectural Police Driver's License Examination Center and the Kyoto Driver's License Renewal Center can handle license renewals on Sundays.

(Except Saturday, public holidays, Year-end and New Year holidays,(between Dec. 29 and Jan. 3)

Cautions

• Since large numbers of people tend to come on Sundays, parking may be difficult at the Kyoto Prefectural Police Driver's License Examination Center.So please try to come by public transport. 
  ※There is no parking and bicycle parking at the Kyoto Driver's License Renewal  Center.So please come by public transport.
• Please understand that if there are many people, waiting times will be longer, and it may not be possible to complete the renewal procedure on that day in some cases.
• If you do not have your driver license with you, e.g., due to loss or theft, or if your license expired, you cannot renew your license on a Sunday. In either case, please come during the week.

My driver license has been suspended. Can I still renew my license?

Even if your license has been suspended, you must still renew it.

In addition to the documents required for normal renewal (except the license itself), please bring your notice of license suspension and a photocopy of your driver license.

For normal renewal at the Kyoto Prefectural Police Driver's License Examination Center, it is not necessary to bring a photo, but in this case it is necessary. (Photo should be 3×2.4 cm (H×W), front-view of upper body (chest up), without a hat, plain background, taken not more than 6 months ago.)

Your renewed driver license will be  issued to you at the end of the suspension period.
