Lost and Found Q&A

Q1: I have lost some property. What should I do?

In this case, you should report your lost property and submit the "lost property report" to the police as soon as possible.

You can do this at any police station, koban or residential  police box.

Q2: What should I do if I find a lost property on the street?

When you find a lost property, you should immediately give it back to the owner or report it to a nearby police station, koban or residential police box and hand over the found item to the police office. In case you failed to report the found item to the police within a week, "the right of the finders" which is a reward from the owner will not apply to you.

Regarding the "right of the finder", the finder has the right to receive a reward from the owner.

Q3: What should I do if I find a lost property in specific public areas like train stations or department stores?

When you find a lost property in specific public areas such as train stations or department stores, you should immediately report it to the station's staff or facility's staff.

If you don't report it to the station's staff or facility's staff  within 24 hours, you will not be qualified for a "finder's right" which you have the right to receive a reward from the owner.
