Short Training Course for Mopeds (Motorbikes up to 50 cc)

This short training course is for riders of mopeds (gentsuki in Japanese, meaning motorbikes up to 50 cc). It is mandatory to take this course when obtaining a gentsuki license. (Without completing this course you will not receive a license certificate.)

The training course is held at five venues:

  • Kyoto Prefecture Traffic Safety Association Driver Training Center (within the Driver License Examination Center in Kyoto City)
  • New Driver Driving School (Kyoto City)
  • Yamashiro Tanabe Driving School (Kyotanabe City)
  • Kyoto Maizuru Driving School (Maizuru City)
  • Mineyama Driving School (Kyotango City)

8:30 to 8:50 a.m.

9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon

2. New Driver Driving School (Kyoto City)

Registration place and time:

Inquire directly with the driving school.

Training days:

Two days per month (1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month, normally)

Training hours:

9:20 a.m. to 12:20 p.m.

3. Yamashiro Tanabe Driving School (Kyotanabe City)

Registration place and time:

Inquire directly with the driving school.

Training days:

One day per month (3rd Tuesday of the month, normally)

4. Kyoto Maizuru Driving School (Maizuru City)

Registration place and time:

Your local police station (with jurisdiction over place of residence)

9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Monday to Friday (except public holidays, New Year holiday period)

Course days:

Once a month (inquire at you local police station)

Course time:

9:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

5. Mineyama Driving School

Registration place and time:

Your local police station (with jurisdiction over place of residence)

9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Once a month (inquire at you local police station)

Course time:

9:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Course Outline

The course includes practical training on riding a moped, and a lecture on road safety.

Course Fee

4,200 yen

Caution

When attending the course, please wear clothing and footwear that is suitable for riding a motorbike.

People who are exempted from attending the course

  • Certain people reapplying for a license after a previous license expired

    Anyone who obtained a license to ride a moped in the past, but then allowed the license to expire, and then when applying again for a license are partially exempted from the required examinations

  • People with overseas licenses

    Anyone holding an overseas license that allows riding of mopeds, who up to six months before the date of application (for a gentsuki license in Japan) stayed in that overseas country for a total of 3 months or more

  • People who attended a re-education seminar after having their license revoked

    Anyone who attended a re-education seminar (after having their license revoked) up to one year before the date of application

  • People who have attended a moped training course in another prefecture

    Anyone who attended such a seminar in another prefecture of Japan up to one year prior to the date of application.
